Karam et al identified risk factors associated with complications after vascular surgery. The authors are from Henry Ford Hospital and the University of South Florida.
Patient selection: vascular surgery
Risk factors for complications:
(1) frailty (using a modified Frailty Index, mFI, of Karam et al)
(2) complexity of surgery based on work RVU
(3) older age
(4) functional status based on level of dependency
(5) ASA classification
(6) CDC wound classification (clean, clean-contaminated, contaminated, dirty)
Factors associated with a low risk of complications:
(1) no evidence of frailty (mFI=0)
(2) low complexity surgery
(3) younger age
(4) functionally independent
(5) ASA 1
(6) CDC wound classification clean
