Description

Kayange et al identified risk factors for positive blood cultures and death in neonates with sepsis admitted to a tertiary hospital in Tanzania. These can help to identify a neonate who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences Mwanza, Tanzania.

Subjects: neonates with early or late onset sepsis

Risk factors for a positive blood culture:

(1) inability to feed

(2) lethargy

(3) cyanosis

(4) meconium-stained amniotic fluid

(5) premature rupture of the membranes (PROM)

(6) seizures

Risk factors for mortality:

(1) positive blood culture

(2) Gram-negative sepsis

(3) infection with antibiotic resistant organisms, including bacteria producing extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
