Kim et al identified factors associated with 30-day readmission after hepatectomy. The authors are from the University of Kentucky and used the ACS-NSQIP database for 2011.
Patient selection: elective hepatectomy
Outcome: 30-day readmission
Reasons for readmission:
(1) surgical site infection (33%)
(2) GI complication (23%)
(3) other (1 to 6%)
Factors associated with readmission:
(1) blood transfusion within 72 hours after surgery (odds ratio 1.7)
(2) extended surgery such as trisectionectomy (odds ratio 1.8)
(3) right hepatectomy (odds ratio 1.7)
(4) operative time > 320 minutes (odds ratio 2.4)
(5) preoperative coagulation disorder (odds ratio 1.7)
Additional preoperative risk factors associated with readmission:
(1) nonsmoker (risk lower if current smoker)
(2) hypoalbuminemia
(3) elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (> 125 U/L but method and reference range not given)
