Description

Klemencsics et al reported risk factors for surgical site infection following elective lumbar spine surgery. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management to prevent infection. The authors are from Buda Health Center and Semmelweis University in Budpest.

Patient selection: elective routine degenerative lumbar spine surgery

Risk factors for surgical site infection:

(1) age

(2) body mass index (BMI)

(3) diabetes, insulin-dependent

(4) ischemic heart disease

(5) cardiac arrhythmia

(6) chronic liver disease

(7) systemic autoimmune disease

The beta-coefficients are given in Table 3 but not the constant.

cumulative odds ratio for surgical site infection =

= PRODUCT(odds ratios for the risk factors)

Performance:

The area under the ROC curve is 0.71.
