Description

Leone et al identified risk factors for a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) in a patient in the intensive care unit (ICU). These can help identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Marseilles University.

Parameters:

(1) gender of the patient

(2) length of time in the ICU

(3) length of time that the urinary catheter has been in place

(4) previous antibiotic therapy

(5) severity score on admission using the SAPS II

where:

• The odds ratio for each risk factor is listed in Table 2. An alternative approach is to multiply the respective odds ratios together.

• The cutoffs for length of time, duration of catheter and SAPS II are not ideal. Since the goal is to identify a person who may be at risk this may be acceptable.

total risk score =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 5

• The greater the number of risk factors the greater the risk of a CAUTI.
