Suicide is an uncommon cause of death for a serial killer. Lester and White identified a number of factors which may help to predict which serial killers will commit suicide. The authors are from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
Subject selection: serial killer
Risk factors associated with childhood:
(1) severely dysfunctional home
(2) maternal and/or paternal mental illness
(3) seductive mother
Risk factors associated with sexuality:
(1) sexual dysfunction
(2) deviant or bizarre sexual acts with murder victims
(3) history of sex crime arrest
Other risk factors:
(1) history of attempted suicide (most significant predictor)
(2) videotaped murder(s)
(3) drugged victims
(4) married at some point
(5) organized
