Mannesse et al identified risk factors for an older adult being admitted to the hospital for an adverse drug reaction (ADR). The authors are from University Hospital Rotterdam and Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
Patient selection: adult >= 70 years of age taking one or more medications
Admission to the hospital as a result of an adverse drug reaction is of the criteria for a severe ADR.
Risk factors for admission to the hospital as a result of an ADR:
(1) therapy with >= 3 drugs
(2) fall prior to the admission
(3) gastrointestinal bleeding
(4) hematuria
An older patient being admitted to the hospital after a fall needs to be evaluated for a potential adverse drug reaction.
