Moriyama et al identified risk factors for a person with a history of international travel to be colonized by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. The authors are from the National Center for Global Health and Medicine in Tokyo and Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital in Japan.
Patient selection: history of international travel
Risk factors for colonization by extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing E. coli:
(1) travel to Asia (aOR 2.9)
Risk factors for colonization by other MDR bacteria:
(1) history of surgery abroad (aOR 13.9)
(2) travel to Asia (aOR 3.4)
It may be prudent to screen patients with these risk factors in the past 2 months to be screened for resistant organisms.
