Parami et al reported risk factors for readmission for a patient with major depression. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management and discharge planning. The authors are from Hamadan University of Medical Sciences and Alborz University of Medical Sciences in Iran.
Patient selection: hospitalized patient with major depressive disorder
Factors associated with readmission:
(1) male gender
(2) younger age at onset of depression (incidence rate ratio 1.02)
(3) illiteracy (IRR 2.06)
(4) living in an urban area (IRR 1.56)
(5) family history of psychiatric illnesses (IRR 1.75)
(6) history of emotional prolems (IRR 1.42)
(7) history of a medical disorder (IRR 1.44)
where:
• Women tended to show better adherence than men.
• Men tended to have higher unemployment and more economic difficulties.
• The reason for the readmission needs to be determined (relapsed depression vs other).
