Description

Saeed et al reported risk factors for a surgical site infection (SSI) associated with Cesarean delivery. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from University College Cork and Cork University Maternity Hospital.

Patient selection: woman status post cesarean delivery

Outcome: incisional surgical site infection within 30 days

Frequency of SSI: 2% of cases

Predictors of surgical site infection on multivariate analysis (from Table 3):

(1) maternal obesity at first antenatal hospital visit (>= 30 kg per square meter; odds ratio 4.2)

(2) hypertensive disorder (pregnancy-induced hypertension or pre-eclampsia; odds ratio 6.0)

(3) emergency cesarean delivery (odds ratio 3.0)

(4) >= 5 vaginal examinations during labor (odds ratio 3.4)

(5) baby weight < 3,500 grams AND not hypertensive (odds ratio 2.2)

Slightly different odds ratios are given in the abstract.
