Safdar et al identified risk factors for candiduria in patients who have had a renal transplant. The authors are from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Candiduria was defined as the presence of > 1,000 cfu of a Candida species per mL urine.
Parameters:
(1) gender
(2) ICU admission (need for critical care)
(3) antibiotic therapy
(4) indwelling bladder catheter
(5) diabetes mellitus
(6) neurogenic bladder
(7) nutritional status

total number of risk factors for candiduria =
= SUM(points for all 7 factors)
Interpretation:
• minimum number of risk factors: 0
• maximum number of risk factors: 7
• The risk for candiduria increases as the number of risk factors increase.
Observations during study:
(1) The presence of candiduria tends to reflect more severe illness.
(2) Renal transplant recipients with candiduria have reduced survival.
(3) Treatment of asymptomatic candiduria does not result in an improved outcome.
(4) Removal of an indwelling bladder catheter can often result in clearing of the candiduria.
