Schover listed several risk factors for dyspareunia for a woman being treated for cancer. The author is from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.


 

Risk factors for dyspareunia:

(1) vaginal changes (dryness, atrophy, etc) associated with premature ovarian failure

(2) tensing pelvic floor muscles during intercourse because of pain anticipation

(3) therapy with an aromatase inhibitor

(4) gonadotropin suppression

 

Factors that can reduce the risk of dyspareunia:

(1) use of vaginal lubricants and moisturizers

(2) muscle relaxation during intercourse
