Description

Schroder et al identified factors associated with postoperative complications in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Medical Spectrum Twente and University of Twente in The Netherlands.

Patient selection: pancreatoduodenectomy

Parameters:

(1) body mass index (BMI) in kg per square meter

(2) ASA status from ASA 1 to ASA 3

(3) mean Hounsefield unit (HU) of the body of the pancreas

In addition, an elevated visceral fat area (VFA) at the umbilicus is associated with a higher risk of post-operative pancreatic fistula (POPF). The VFA in patients with POPF was 121.5 to 210.8 square cm vs 90 to 152.5 in patients without.
