Risk Factors of Zhang et al for Upper Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis (UEDVT) Associated with a Peripherally-Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) in a Patient with Cancer
Zhang et al identified risk factors for upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) in patients with Peripherally-Inserted Central Catheter (PICC). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive or from alternative therapy. The authors are from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center in Guangzhou, China.
Patient selection: PICC line in a patient with a malignancy
Outcome: deep vein thrombosis associated with the PICC line
Recognition of deep vein thrombosis:
(1) symptomatic: swelling of arm, pain, leakage at PICC site
(2) ultrasound examination
Risk factors for deep vein thrombosis:
(1) malignant lymphoma (7.1% vs 2.8% with other cancers; odds ratio 3.8)
(2) chemotherapy infused through the PICC line (odds ratio 1.44, p-value nonsignificant)
