Zhou et al reported risk factors for early postpartum venous thromboembolism. These can help to identify a woman who may require closer monitoring and prophylaxis. The authors are from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.
Patient selection: postpartum
Risk factors for early postpartum venous thromboembolism:
(1) pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (OR 2.9)
(2) postpartum hemorrhage (OR 4.6)
An elevated D-dimer concentration is associated with venous thromboembolism.
Additional factors that may contribute:
(1) >= 2 deliveries (OR 1.7)
(2) birth weight (OR 0.5 if < 2,500 g; OR 1.6 if 2,500 to 4,000 g)
