Laging et al developed a comorbidity score for evaluating a patient with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) prior to renal transplantation. The authors are from Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.
Patient selection: end-stage renal disease (reason for ESRD not being included in score)
Parameters:
(1) cardiovascular disease
(2) cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
(3) peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
(4) diabetes mellitus
(5) liver disease
(6) lung disease
(7) malignancy
(8) HIV

= SUM(points for all 8 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 15
• The higher the score the greater the risk for mortality.
• The risk for mortality also increases with stage, starting after 40 years of age.
