Jimenez et al reported a simplified version of the Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI, see 08.29.30). The authors are from a multinational cohort of outpatients registered with the Registro Informatizado de la Enfermedad Tromboembolica (RIETE).
Parameters:
(1) age
(2) history of cancer
(3) history of heart failure and/or chronic lung disease
(4) heart rate
(5) systolic blood pressure
(6) arterial oxyhemoglobin saturation in percent

simplified PESI =
= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 6
• A score of 0 indicates low risk and a score >= 1 indicates high risk.
Performance:
• The ROC curve for the simplified score was comparable to the original PESI.
• The sensitivity was 96% and specificity 33%. The positive predictive value was 11% and negative predictive value 99% (low false negative, high false positive).
Purpose: To screen a patient for the risk of pulmonary embolism using the simplified pulmonary embolism severity index (s-PESI).
Specialty: Pulmonology
Objective: severity, prognosis, stage
ICD-10: I26,
