A storage room can be a neglected space in the laboratory, but potential hazards can be found there.


Sources of danger may include:

(1) fire

(2) hazardous chemicals

(3) electrical hazards

(4) physical injury related to moving supplies

 

General features:

(1) sturdy, well-built shelves

(2) proper distribution of supplies, avoiding heavy objects on upper shelves

(3) compliance with fire regulations

(4) good ventilation

(5) stable temperature that avoids extremes of heat and cold

(6) steps to reduce static electricity

(7) no unsafe electrical wiring or use of extension cables

(8) clean without dust, especially organic and metallic ones

(9) have assistive devices for moving supplies

(10) require appropriate personal protective equipment

(11) be free of excess moisture and humidity

(12) not have strong sunlight

 

Chemicals:

(1) should be discarded if expired or show signs of deterioration

(2) should be kept separate if incompatible or reactive chemicals

(3) should have accumulated residue removed

(4) should be segregated and properly stored if toxic

 

Flammable liquids:

(1) should be in proper containers and/or in a flammable storage cabinet

(2) should not exceed amounts permitted by fire regulations

 

Other:

(1) appropriate storage of gas cylinders

(2) materials should have appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets

(3) appropriate spill kits should be available
