The salinity of a solution refers to the amount of salt (sodium chloride) present. One way to express salinity is by the weight percent of sodium chloride.
The weight percent of salt is the (number of grams of sodium chloride) in 100 grams of solution.

The salinity of salt water varies but is approximately 3.5%.
molecular weight of sodium chloride: 22.99 + 35.45 = 58.44
molecular weight of water: 18
