Description

Some patients with indications for laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be treated as outpatients. It is important to select these patients carefully in order avoid complications.


Synonym: day surgery laparoscopic cholecystectomy (DSLC)

 

Patient selection: symptomatic chronic cholecystitis

 

Selection criteria for same day laparoscopic cholecystectomy:

(1) no common bile duct stones identified and low risk for concomitant bile duct stones

(2) ASA I or II, possibly III

(3) absence of other significant diseases prior to surgery

(4) low body mass index (BMI), use  <30 in the implementation

(5) social conditions

(6) informed consent

(7) able to return to hospital quickly if a problem arises

(8) responsible caregiver present

(9) surgeon trained and experienced about risks

 

Contraindications:

(1) significant acute cholecystitis

(2) pancreatitis

(3) BMI > 32 kg per square meter

(4) ASA IV or V

(5) presence of common bile duct stones or high risk for stones

 

Challenges:

(1) postoperative nausea and vomiting

(2) pain control
