Sapoviruses can cause gastroenteritis in infants, children and adults.

Type: RNA virus
The virus can infect swine, dogs, cats and other animals.
It can be spread by fecal contamination of water supplies.
Outbreaks may be foodborne.
Clinical findings:
(1) mild gastroenteritis with abdominal pain and vomiting
(2) pseudo bowel obstruction
The diagnosis is usually considered after other pathogens (norovirus, astrovirus, pathogenic bacteria) have been excluded. Infections may be mixed with multiple virus types present.
