Fatigue may be a prominent clinical symptom for a patient with sarcoidosis. This may be associated with disability and a reduced quality of life.
Factors associated with fatigue in a patient with sarcoidosis:
(1) systemic constitutional symptoms with an acute phase reaction (with elevated C-reactive protein and cytokines)
(2) skeletal muscle weakness
(3) exercise intolerance
(4) female gender
(5) pituitary and/or endocrine dysfunction
A patient with sarcoidosis should be asked about fatigue and steps taken to reduce its severity.
