Ferro et al reported a score for predicting the outcome for a patient with a cerebral vein and dural sinus thrombosis. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe, Mexico and Brazil.
Patient selection: derivation set from database for the International Study on Cerebral Vein and Dural Sinus Thrombosis (ISCVT). The validation sets were from the VENO-PORT and additional patients admitted to ISCVT centers.
Outcome: death or modified Rankin scale > 2 (disabled)
Parameters:
(1) gender
(2) mental status disturbance
(3) coma
(4) malignancy
(5) thrombosis of the deep venous system
(6) intracranial hemorrhage

= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 9 (To achieve this coma and altered mental status have to be separate).
• The higher the score the greater the risk for a poor outcome.
• A score >= 3 indicated risk for poor outcome.
