Schena et al screened for congenital heart disease in neonates using a pulse oximeter. The authors are from multiple institutions in Italy.
Patient selection: neonate
Evaluation: oxygen saturation in percent and perfusion index using a pulse oximeter
Positive screening tests - one or more of the following:
(1) postductal (foot) SpO2 <= 95%
(2) > 3% difference in SpO2 between pre (hand) and post (foot) ductal sites
(3) single site perfusion index < 0.90
A positive test is repeated in 30 minutes. If the test was still positive then the patient is referred for echocardiography.
