If cerebral palsy is to be detected early, then there may be benefits to observing infants with risk factors for cerebral palsy. Mild cases may present initially with seemingly minor findings.
Patient: term infant in general population
Factors that can be used to screen for risk of cerebral palsy:
(1) maternal tobacco use
(2) maternal drug use
(3) maternal diabetes
(4) pre-eclampsia
(5) chorioamnionitis
(6) prolonged rupture of the membranes
(7) male sex of infant
(8) number of pregnancies (see below)
(9) number of miscarriages
(10) 5-minute Apgar score
(11) birthweight
(12) gestational age in weeks
The number of pregnancies was divided in the implementation:
(1) primiparity has an increased risk
(2) pregnancy with multiple fetuses, especially after in vitro fertilization
