Description

Sato et al used the calf muscle circumference (CMC) to screen on older adult for sarcopenia. This is a refinement of using the calf circumference to screen for sarcopenia. It is based on removing the influence of skin and subcutaneous fat from the calf circumference. The authors are from Nishinasumo General Home Care Center and International University of Health and Welfare in Japan.

circumference = PI() * (diameter)

Patient selection: age 65 to 100 years

Parameters:

(1) skinfold thickness of the calf in mm

(2) calf circumference in cm

calf muscle circumference in cm =

= (calf circumference) - (PI() * (skinfold thickness) / 10)

where:

• The denominator 10 in the term is used to convert mm to cm.

Sex

Sarcopenia

male

< 30.9 cm

female

< 28.7 cm

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.79 for males and 0.74 for females.
