Li et al reported a screening score for Epstein-Barr virus related hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH). This centers on the number of hematopoietic lineages showing cytopenia. The authors are from Hunan Children's Hospital, in China.
Patient selection: pediatric patient with active EBV infection
Parameters (based on a model for cytopenia in 3 lineages):
(1) hemoglobin in g/L
(2) platelet count in 10^9/L
(3) absolute neutrophil count
(4) serum albumin in g/L
(5) serum LDH in IU/L

total score =
= SUM(points for all of the parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 84
• A score >= 29 has a sensitivity of 0.92 and specificity of 0.90 in the training set.
• According to the footnote to Table 2 logit P = (0.1 * (score)) - 6.16
