A patient with hepatic echinococcosis may develop the Budd-Chiari syndrome.
The Budd-Chiari syndrome may develop:
(1) with either cystic or alveolar echinococcosis.
(2) with compression of the hepatic veins and/or inferior vena cava (IVC)
The patient develops portal hypertension, hepatomegaly and ascites. Additional clinical findings may include:
(1) abdominal pain
(2) edema of the lower extremities
(3) gastrointestinal bleeding
(4) hepatic failure
Imaging studies demonstrate the parasitic cyst(s) and/or vascular compression.
Therapy may include:
(1) excision of the parasitic mass
(2) portosystemic shunt surgery
(3) liver transplant
(4) stent placement
