Seoul virus is a Hantavirus (family Bunyavirus) which can cause the Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS).
Distribution: world-wide, primarily East Asia
Animal host: brown Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus), other rodents
Transmission: aerosolized urine, fecal droppings or saliva
Many infections may be subclinical or mild.
Clinical findings:
(1) fever
(2) myalgias
(3) renal failure
(4) hypotension
(5) hemorrhage
The mortality rate is about 1-2% of patients with clinical disease.
Laboratory findings:
(1) thrombocytopenia
(2) leukocytosis
(3) elevated liver function tests
(4) hypoxemia
(5) elevated serum creatinine
(6) elevated C-reactive protein (CRP)
Diagnosis can be made by serology or PCR.
