Description

Lissalde-Lavigne et al developed a simple score for predicting survival in a patient with septic shock. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from University Hospital Nimes and Montpellier University in France.

Patient selection: septic shock

Outcome: 7-day mortality (1 week)

Parameters:

(1) SAPS II score

(2) age in years

(3) plasma fibrinogen in g/L

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: -15

• maximum score: 6

• A score >= -0.5 was used as the cutoff to identify high risk.

Performance:

• At a cutoff of –0.5 the negative predictive value is 0.99.

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.93.
