Miceli et al used the serum aspergillus galactomannan index (GMI) as a surrogate marker for outcome in patients with aspergillosis. The authors are from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
Patient selection: Patients with hematologic malignancy AND definite or probable aspergillosis
Outcomes: survival vs death secondary to aspergillosis at autopsy
Method: sandwich ELISA (Bio-Rad Laboratories)
The serum aspergillus galactomannan index was considered positive if 2 aliquots from the same serum sample has an optical density (OD) >= 0.5.
