Serum interleukin concentrations can be useful biomarkers for neonatal sepsis.
Interleukins most useful for the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis:
(1) interleukin-6
(2) ratio of interleukin-6 to interleukin-10
Interleukins:
(1) are markedly elevated prior to treatment
(2) will return to normal with successful therapy
Performance:
• Interleukins performed better than CRP for the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis.
