A man with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) may experience sexual dysfunction.
Types of sexual dysfunction that may be experienced:
(1) erectile dysfunction (ED)
(2) impaired orgasm
(3) reduced satisfaction with sexual intercourse
Risk factors for sexual dysfunction in a male with ankylosing spondylitis:
(1) pain
(2) limited joint mobility, especially in the back and pelvis
(3) kyphosis
(4) depression
(5) medications
(6) cauda equina syndrome
(7) amyloidosis
(8) fatigue
(9) severe cardiovascular disease
A patient with AS who experiences morning stiffness for more than 4 hours is at increased risk of ED (Pirildar et al, 2004).
