Surgical needles come in a variety of geometric shapes that are suited for the needs of tissue closure.
Basic shapes:
(1) straight
(2) J-shaped
(3) circular arc
(4) compound curve
(5) 1/2 curved (mixed straight with curved end, resembling a hockey stick)

90 degrees
1/4 circle
135 degrees
3/8 circle
180 degrees
1/2 circle
225 degrees
5/8 circle
Needles come in a range of sizes. Delicate operations (coronary arteries, ocular) use small needles while closure of thick fascia may involve large needels, with most in-between.
