Description

Rosenberg et al developed a simplified age weight score (SAWS) to evaluate mortality in very low birth weight infants in low-resource settings. The authors are from the Johns Hopkins University, the Bangladesh Institute of Child Helath and Kumudini Women's Medical College in Bangladesh.


 

Patient selection: neonate < 34 weeks of gestation with birthweight <= 1,500 grams

Interpretation:

• A score <= 8 was associated with low to moderate risk of mortality.

• A score >= 9 was associated with high risk of mortality.
