Description

Pomar et al reported a simplified version of the Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring System. This can help to identify a neonate with the neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). The authors are from the University of Kentucky, College on Problems of Drug Dependence (Philadelphia), and the University of Louisville.

Patient selection: neonate

Parameters:

(1) cry

(2) tremors

(3) increased muscle tone

(4) sleep

(5) nasal stuffiness

(6) respiratory rate in breaths per minute

(7) excessive sucking

(8) poor feeding

(9) feed tolerance

(10) stools
