L'Hermite et al reported the Simplified Predictive Intubation Difficult Score (SPIDS). This can help to identify a patient for whom extra precautions may be required. The authors are from multiple institutions in France.
Parameters:
(1) pathologies associated with difficult intubations (malformation of face, acromegaly, cervical rheumatism with limited neck movement, tumor of airway, diabetes mellitus with stiff joint syndrome)
(2) mouth opening in cm
(3) ratio of the patient's height to thyromental distance (RHTMD)
(4) maximum range of head and neck movement in degrees
(5) Mallampati modified test

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 55
• A score > 10 is associated with a difficult intubation.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.78.
