Description

Soldatovic et al reported the siMS score for evaluating a patient for the metabolic syndrome. The authors are from the Institute of Medical Statistics and Informatics in Belgrade, Mother and Child Health Institute of Servia, Clinical Center of Belgrade and the University of Belgrade in Serbia.

siMS = simple method for quantifying the metabolic syndrome

Patient selection: age from 7 to 77 years

Parameters:

(1) waist circumference in cm

(2) height in cm

(3) blood glucose in mmol/L

(4) serum triglycerides in mmol/L

(5) systolic blood pressure in mm Hg

(6) serum HDL cholesterol in mmol/L

(7) sex

(8) age in years

(9) family history of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease

waist to height ratio =

= (waist) / (height)

Parameter

Points

waist/height ratio

2 * (ratio)

glucose

(glucose) / 5.6

triglycerides

(triglycerides) / 1.7

systolic BP

(systolic) / 130

HDL cholesterol if male

-1 * (HDL) / 1.02

HDL cholesterol if female

-1 * (HDL) / 1.28

siMS score =

= SUM(points for all of the parameters)

risk score =

= (siMS score) * (age factor) * (family history of cardio or cerebrovascular events)

Interpretation:

The higher the siMS score the greater the risk for the metabolic syndrome.

The higher the risk score the greater the risk tor the patient.
