Description

Some patients with a chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may develop Sjogren's syndrome that differs from the primary disease in a number of features.

Features:

(1) chronic hepatitis C virus (chronic hepatitis, positive serology)

(2) dry eye, xerostomia and other salivary gland findings

(3) cryoglobulinemia

(4) lymphocytic capillaritis in the glands

Findings that go against the diagnosis of primary Sjogren's Syndrome:

(1) absence of anti-Ro/SS-A and anti-La/SS-B

(2) absence of chronic inflammation within the ducts of the salivary glands
