Sacko et al reported the SKALE score (sex, KPS, ASA. location, edema) score to determine if an older patient with a meningioma can undergo surgery. The authors are from Pellegrin University and Hopital Purpan in France.
Patient selection: intracranial meningioma and >= 80 years old
Parameters:
(1) sex
(2) Karnofsky Performance Status
(3) ASA class
(4) location (critical if in the cranial base, an eloquent area or near a large vessel)
(5) edema

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 16
• The lower the score the worse the outcome.
• Surgery is feasible if the score is >= 8.
