Description

Rowell et al described the presence of erythema multiforme-like skin lesions in patients with lupus erythematosus (LE). Zeitouni et al proposed criteria for diagnosis of the syndrome. These authors are from Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec.

Major criteria:

(1) some form of lupus erythematosus (subacute cutaneous, discoid, systemic)

(2) erythema multiforme-like skin lesions (with or without mucous membrane involvement)

(3) antinuclear antibodies (ANA) with a speckled pattern

Minor criteria:

(1) chilblains (skin lesions associated with cryoglobulinemia)

(2) anti-La antibodies

(3) anti-Ro antibodies

(4) rheumatoid factor

The diagnosis of Rowell syndrome is made if the patient has all 3 major criteria and at least 1 minor criterion.
