A patient with a Chiari I malformation may experience sleep apnea, including as its presenting symptom.
Features of Chiari type I malformation:
(1) caudal ectopia of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum
(2) compression of the brain stem, upper spinal cord and cranial nerves
(3) occipital headaches and dizziness
A patient with Chiari type I malformations may experience:
(1) sleep apnea
(2) nocturnal respiratory problems
Risk of sleep-disordered breathing:
(1) female >= 52 years of age
(2) male > 29 years of age
(3) obesity
(4) hydrocephalus
