Poor sleep quality or quantity can have a number of adverse effects for the patient in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Consequences of poor sleep quality:
(1) excessive daytime sleepiness
(2) lethargy
(3) irritability
(4) confusion, decrease in alertness or delirium
(5) poor short-term memory
(6) hyperalgesia
(7) catecholamine release with negative effects on cardiovascular and/or endocrine systems
(8) increased anxiety and/or change in mood
Failure to recognize the cause of these changes can result in:
(1) unnecessary testing
(2) delayed discharge
(3) suboptimal rehabilitation or participation in care by the patient
