The size of the spleen in children can be correlated with body length. Ultrasound measurements can be used to estimate splenic size for comparison with population norms. The study was done at the Universities of Mainz and Freiburg in the Germany.
Ages of subjects: from 10 days to 17.6 years
Sonography:
• The patients are measured in the supine position.
• Section planes were taken in the longitudinal and transverse axis of the spleen.
splenic volume in cubic centimeters =
= 0.523 * (length in cm along the longitudinal section) * (length in cm along the transverse section) * (((breadth in cm along the longitudinal section) + (breadth in cm along the transverse section)) / 2)
regression line for splenic volume =
= (0.51 * (body height in cm)) – 13.38
95% limits: +/- 33.75
