An object traveling at Mach 1 is traveling at the speed of sound. Many combat jets travel beyond the speed of sound.
For simplicity the speed of sound will be taken as that in dry air at 0°C. As indicated in the previous section the speed of sound is affected by temperature, and it is also affected by the degree of humidity.
The speed of sound at 0°C in dry air (Mach 1) is:
(1) 331.5 meters per second
(2) 1193.3 kilometers per hour
(3) 741.56 miles per hour
