Description

Staphylococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) can occur in burn patients and can be difficult to diagnose.


 

TSS should be suspected in a burn patient with unexplained:

(1) fever

(2) nausea and vomiting

(3) diarrhea

(4) hypotension

(5) erythematous rash

 

Onset may be within 2-3 days of hospital admission. It can involve relatively minor burns and/or scald injury .

 

People at risk for Staphylococcal TSS:

(1) use of occlusive dressings

(2) presence of a patient on the ward with TSS

(3) positive culture for Staphylococcus aureus

(4) absence of neutralizing antibody against the toxin
