A patient with head and neck cancer is at increased risk for suicide. Head and neck cancer is the 7th most prevalent cancer globally (Anderson et al).
Patient selection: head and neck cancer
Risk factors for suicide:
(1) traumatic experiences during management (PTSD)
(2) smoking and alcohol misuse
(3) history of psychiatric disorder
(4) male sex
(5) significant pain
(6) fear of recurrence
where:
• Some of the risk factors for head and neck cancer are smoking and excessive alcohol use, both of which can be self-medications for stress or depression.
• Since the marks of surgery are often visible, stigma may also impact patients.
Psychiatric monitoring and management should be part of the treatment plan for a patient with head and neck cancer.
