High levels of sulfur in fuels is associated with particulates causing air pollution. Many governments are setting standards to reduce the amount of sulfur in various fuels.
The content of sulfur may vary:
(1) between countries
(2) between gasoline and diesel
(3) between on-road and off-road vehicles
(4) based on transport type (higher in marine and locomotive)
Sulfur Content Gasoline
Term
<= 15 ppm
ultra-low
16 to 50 ppm
low
50 to 500 ppm
> 500 ppm
high
>= 10,000 ppm
ultra-high
Gasoline in the United States typically has a sulfur content <= 10 ppm.
The highest sulfur content tends to be found in developing countries. Heavy diesel fuel used in ships was high in sulfur but regulations are reducing the content.
