Ferrazzini et al used a simple symptom score to describe the severity of diaper dermatitis for an infant. This can be used to monitor the infant over time and to determine the effectiveness of interventions. The authors are from Zurich, Switzerland.
Parameters:
(1) erythema
(2) pustules
(3) maceration
(4) desquamation
Scale for Each Clinical Finding
Points
none, absent
0
mild
1
moderate
2
distinct
3
strong
4
total symptom score =
= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum symptom score: 0
• maximum symptom score: 16 (it is reported as 20 on page 137, but 4 * 4 = 16)
• The higher the score the more severe the dermatitis.
