Bonilla-Martinez et al developed the Cutaneous LE Disease Area and Severity Index (CLASI) to evaluate patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The total activity score is a measure of disease activity. The authors are from the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Hospital.
Parameters for the activity score:
(1) erythema in 13 anatomical locations
(2) scale or hypertrophy in 13 anatomical locations
(3) lesions on mucous membranes
(4) recent hair loss within the past 30 days
(5) alopecia in 4 scalp quadrants (dividing lines = sagittal midline and coronal at the external acoustic meatus)
Anatomical locations:
(1) scalp
(2) ears
(3) nose and malar region
(4) rest of face
(5) V area of chest and neck in front
(6) posterior neck and shoulders
(7) chest
(8) abdomen
(9) back and buttocks
(10) arms
(11) hands
(12) legs
(13) feet

total activity score =
= (points for erythema) + (points for scale or hypertrophy) + (points for mucous membrane lesions) + (points for recent hair loss) + (points for alopecia)
Interpretation:
• minimum total activity score: 0
• maximum total activity score: 70
• The higher the score the greater the disease activity.
Purpose: To determine the total disease activity in cutaneous lupus erythematosus using the CLASI of Bonilla-Martinez et al.
Specialty: Immunology/Rheumatology
Objective: imaging studies, laboratory tests, criteria for diagnosis, disease progression, quality of life
